Bright-ass red Transit Connect. I really liked how it looked. Put some nice wheels on it and 10/10 would daily.

These things seriously suck to drive. The loaner one my mom got was a fully loaded Titanium LWB (in bright ass red) and it still sucked. 20 miles of dashboard and everything is solid, cheap plastic. The seats were so obviously designed for nothing more than durability. It drove ok but wasn’t great and it was soooo noisy. Work vans just need to stay work vans.

yeah.. they are kinda like type II VW vans - functional and kinda nifty but not exactly nice to drive

We have them as our work fleet cars (large major US Insurance company). Terrible gas mileage, no guts (4 cylinder that feels tuned like a riding lawnmower), small tank for a van, and not very comfortable. On the plus side they look decent, have plenty of room for a ladder and work stuff, and the handling is okay. I would not buy one.

WRONG. Give them to conversion companies.

I have an irrational hatred for conversion vans because the Explorer Savanna conversions I have to work on at the dealership suck major ass to work on.

Plus connects are too small to be conversion vans IMO.

Have you driven other vehicles in this segment? I love the way that the TC drives. I put almost 20k mi on mine last year.

well...but...does it mater if its good in its own segment? I mean it rattles like crazy, the ride is flinty and its a generally unpleasant to be in. its 20k miles young.

To be fair that’s true of most utility vans. I’ve gotten to drive most of them through the years and I like the Astro most of all. Perfect size for me as a phone/audio tech, and could fit in most parking garages even with a ladder rack. Those transits can’t even fit a 6' ladder in the back. I have a caravan at my current job and it is the same way. There is not much room even as just a service vehicle. We have a full size Dodge that is based on the Fiat Ducato and no one likes that van. The seating position is weird and it has the same problem as the caravans when ascending a hill, the transmission doesn’t know which gear to use and is constantly shifting. I’m not talking about grades, but normal hills.

I’ve heard bad things about the ducato vans

Saw a brown one with barn doors and a roof rack with cross rails today. It was bad ass.

The real ducato vans don’t have that transmission issue though. They have a manual transmission. I doubt an auto is even available.

You can get the same robotized manual that the diesel gets here. I’d imagine it’s really uncommon, but it is a thing.

What’s terrible, though, and what driving conditions are they being used in?

That said, I’m thinking that if Ford could figure out how to package the battery, the hybrid powertrain out of the C-Max and Fusion would be a fantastic idea for this. The things are marketed as urban delivery vans, which involves a lot of stop and go...

We use them for our inspections, so they are running non-stop at idle when we are in them and then we use them to go to our clients. Myself and other coworkers harps are mainly the gas mileage and comfort of the seats. Lots of stop-and -go like you said and idling.

to be fair it was a commercial vehicle first; the passenger version kind of an afterthought.
